  • Don’t brush your teeth soon after eating something sweet and sticky like raisins, caramel, or chewy mint, as you will end up brushing away some of the enamel as well. Rinse your mouth instead and limit your consumption of these foods.
  • Refrain from sipping on a sugary drink all day long. The longer you take to finish your drink, the more you expose your enamel to the acids that cause tooth decay.
  • Read the labels on packages to determine whether the foods you are consuming are entirely free from sugar. Several ‘sugar-free’ items contain natural sugars that are as harmful to your teeth as added sugars.
  • Snack on healthier alternatives like cheese, nuts or broccoli and choose crunchy fruits like apples, cucumbers and pears. These have a high water content and stimulate saliva production, which in turn dilutes the sugars they contain.
  • It is also helpful to choose candies or mints that contain artificial sweeteners like sorbitol or mannitol. Bacteria don’t feed on these substitutes as they do on sugars, so they don’t produce enamel-eroding acids.
