Continuing Education

Commitment to Excellence

Why would anyone care? After four years of dental school the average graduating student has completed about 10 crowns, 25 fillings of various types, one or two complete dentures and maybe 3 or 4 root canals. The dental degree (and the license you can get with it) is, in reality, a license to learn.

There is simply not enough time, even in four years, to acquire the didactic education and technical and clinical expertise necessary to become proficient in any aspect of dentistry. Without a commitment to continuing education, the “practice of dentistry” is practiced on patients and any significant improvement, growth and evolution in the science, art and practice of this complex discipline would be marginal at best.

I can say without equivocation that there is virtually nothing that I’m doing today that has remained unchanged or unimproved, not only in materials and technology but also in my technical skill level, from what I learned and did in dental school from 1976 - 1980. If there are new tools, techniques or solutions that can make your experience easier, safer or produce better long term outcomes, I am committed to discovering and implementing them.

As I write this, in November 2013, the State of Arizona requires 72 hours every three years, an average of 3 days a year of continuing education. And many hours of this minimal requirement can be satisfied with online courses, lectures on how to manage your business or how to invest. The average dentist spends less than $1000.00 per year, including travel, on continuing education. Since 2008, when I began keeping a public record on my website, I have invested an average of 170 hours or 21 days and $22,000 a year in my professional growth and development through continuing education, not counting the teaching that I do. It’s a major commitment, my patients are the direct beneficiaries, and that is why you should care.
